What is Digital Alexandria?

Digital Alexandria is a way of cataloging and storing the collective Arts & Sciences knowledge of the members of the SCA.  How often have you wished to be able to read someone’s research, or attended a class only to have lost the hand out?  Maybe you want to start researching something but don’t know where to start?  This website contains A&S projects that have been submitted by the users.  You can search for projects by meta tag or feel free to “browse the stacks” by clicking the Division number in the blue font above.

The idea of Digital Alexandria started when I watched my Pelican, Master Gunnar Sigurdsson at 50 Year. He spent the week interviewing and video taping members of the SCA tell “Story Core” type stories about the SCA. It got me thinking about how much information the SCA researches and “discovers”, only to lose that data when members leave the society.  Many people have individual websites that they post their data on but it’s frustrating to 1. remember the site address or 2. ten years pass and the site is gone.

I came across this problem myself when I was researching Persian garb. I went to Pennsic in 2009 and they had all the Persian related handouts on a website, Persian University. Unfortunately that site is now gone, and so is much of the knowledge. I was able to use the WayBackMachine to pull the data, but I was lucky. I can’t be the only person who has these issues!
